Local Cuisine in Andaman: Seafood, Coconut & Island Flavours

Taste local Andaman cuisine with island hosts: fresh seafood, coconut curries, tropical fruits and hands-on cooking, with the stories behind each dish.

Overview

Local cuisine in the Andaman Islands reflects the many communities who made the islands home: Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayali, Ranchi and Karen families, among others. The result is a kitchen of coconut, mustard, curry leaf and the day's catch. Our food experience, Taste of the Islands, introduces this cuisine through a meal and, where hosts are available, a cooking session with a willing local family.

Andaman cuisine is a story told in coconut, fish and spice. Because the islands' people came from many parts of India and beyond, island kitchens blend Bengali mustard and fish, South Indian coconut and curry leaf, and the simple freshness of seafood landed that morning. Taste of the Islands explores this food culture through a meal that becomes a cultural encounter.

With a local host, you sample fresh seafood, coconut-rich curries, tropical fruits and seasonal vegetables, and you learn the stories behind the dishes: who taught the recipe, which festival it belongs to, and how island ingredients changed it over time. Where suitable hosts are available, the experience includes a hands-on cooking session where you grind spices, prepare a curry or wrap fish in banana leaf before sitting down to eat together.

Menus follow the season and the market, so no two experiences are quite the same. Vegetarian and seafood-free versions are easy to arrange.
