Local Crafts in Andaman: Cane, Coconut & Island Handicrafts

Andaman local crafts with willing artisans: cane, bamboo and coconut-shell workshops where you learn a technique and meet the maker. Price on request.

Overview

Local crafts in the Andaman Islands are rooted in the materials around them: cane and bamboo from the forest, coconut shell and wood from island gardens. Craft traditions came with settler families from across India and have been adapted to island life. In our craft experience, Made by Island Hands, you spend time in a small workshop with a willing artisan, learn a simple technique and leave with something you made yourself.

Made by Island Hands brings you into the workshops of local artisans who have chosen to share their craft. Across the islands, makers work with materials that grow around them: cane and bamboo woven into baskets and mats, coconut shells shaped into bowls and spoons, palm leaves plaited into practical objects, and wood turned into simple household items.

In a small group, you watch an artisan at work, hear how they learned their skill, and then try it yourself under their guidance. It might be weaving the base of a small basket, finishing a coconut-shell bowl or learning a traditional knot. The emphasis is on the person and the process, not on producing a perfect souvenir.

We work only with participating makers who wish to share their work, and they are paid fairly for their time. We never use protected marine materials such as coral or shells from reefs, and the workshops do not involve or depict indigenous communities.

Responsible Travel

Local experiences centre on willing local hosts and public heritage. The indigenous communities of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are never marketed, visited, approached or photographed, and we respect their protected status completely.

Local Crafts follows our responsible travel promise. We keep groups small, use established routes and permitted locations, pay hosts fairly and leave every place as we found it. We never promise wildlife sightings, and we never market, visit or photograph the islands' indigenous communities, whose privacy and protected status we fully respect.

Please carry a refillable bottle, use reef-safe sunscreen, avoid touching coral or wildlife and ask before photographing people.
