Heritage Walks in Andaman: Port Blair & Ross Island

Heritage walks in Andaman: Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair) streets, the Cellular Jail story and Ross Island ruins, told by local storytellers.

Overview

Heritage walks bring the layered history of the Andaman Islands to life. In Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), the Cellular Jail stands as a national memorial to India's freedom struggle, while old bazaars, clock towers and markets tell the story of settlers from across India. A short boat ride away, Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep) holds the ruins of the former British administrative headquarters, slowly embraced by banyan roots. This page brings together our two heritage experiences, The Island Stories Walk and Echoes of the Islands.

Most travellers treat Port Blair, now officially Sri Vijaya Puram, as a transit stop between the airport and the ferry. The Island Stories Walk shows why the capital deserves a slower look. With a local host, you explore its everyday character on foot: the lively lanes around Aberdeen Bazaar and its clock tower, small neighbourhood shops, tea stalls, places of worship and the corners where island life quietly unfolds.

Along the way, your host shares how this small city came to be. Families arrived from Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Chota Nagpur, Myanmar and beyond across the colonial era and after independence, and their languages, festivals and recipes blended into a distinctly Andaman culture. You hear these stories at food stops, in markets and from people who choose to share them.

The walk is respectful and people-centred. We visit public spaces and willing hosts, ask before photographing anyone, and keep groups small so the city's rhythm is never disturbed.

Echoes of the Islands is a guided heritage experience that peels back the historical layers of the Andaman Islands. Its heart is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island, better known as Ross Island, a short boat ride from Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair). Once the administrative headquarters of the British settlement, its church, bakery, officers' quarters and other buildings now stand in atmospheric ruin, slowly embraced by enormous banyan and ficus roots.

Your guide brings these remains to life with stories of the island's rise, the earthquake of 1941, the Japanese occupation during the Second World War and the long struggle for Indian independence that the islands came to symbolise. Depending on your interests and opening days, the experience can extend to other approved heritage sites in and around the capital, linking the past to the city you see today.

We approach history with care. The islands' story includes hardship and loss, and the guide shares it thoughtfully, giving space for reflection rather than spectacle.

Local experiences centre on willing local hosts and public heritage. The indigenous communities of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are never marketed, visited, approached or photographed, and we respect their protected status completely.

Heritage Walks follows our responsible travel promise. We keep groups small, use established routes and permitted locations, pay hosts fairly and leave every place as we found it.
